As global warming intensifies and extreme weather events such as dry spells and droughts become more frequent, water resources are coming under increasing pressure. At the same time, water is an essential foundation for food production. The symposium “Water Under Pressure: Climate, Consumption, and Cycles” therefore addressed the topic of water from the perspectives of agriculture, consumption, and energy production.
At the symposium, Hermine Mitter explained why sustainable adjustments to irrigation must meet both economic and environmental requirements. She also called for greater involvement of farmers and their real-life circumstances in education programs and incentive systems.
